Trading nickel with a prop firm: complete 2026 guide (LME price, rules, strategy)

Nickel is one of the most nervous industrial metals on the commodity markets: between stainless steel, electric batteries and Indonesian production, its price can move by several percent in a single session. For a prop firm trader, it is both a diversification opportunity and a volatility trap. Here is the complete guide to trading nickel with a prop firm in 2026, with current figures, the challenge rules to respect and a strategy adapted to funded accounts.

Nickel in October 2026: the key figures

At the start of October 2026, London Metal Exchange (LME) nickel is trading around 15,165 to 15,600 USD per tonne (official LME cash price on 20 October: 15,165 USD/t; Trading Economics recorded 15,600 USD/t on 19 October). The metal hit its yearly low on 8 October at 15,415 USD/t, before stabilising in a narrow corridor. End-of-2026 forecasts point to an average of around 17,500 USD/t, with scenarios ranging from 15,000 to 23,280 USD/t depending on the research houses.

Why this downward pressure? Three structural factors:

  • Indonesian overproduction: Indonesia now accounts for more than half of the world's ore supply, notably as NPI (nickel pig iron), and its capacity keeps growing faster than demand.
  • Stainless steel demand: around 70% of nickel goes into stainless steel, a cycle closely tied to Chinese industry.
  • Batteries: the growth of electric vehicles supports demand for battery-grade nickel sulphate, but the "class 1" premium remains volatile in the face of Indonesian supply.

The result: a metal in structural surplus but capable of violent directional explosions, like the historic short squeeze of March 2022 when nickel rose above 100,000 USD/t in two days, forcing the LME to suspend the market. Remember this lesson: nickel is the metal where tail risk is highest.

Why trade nickel with a prop firm rather than directly

With a challenge account, you do not own the metal: you speculate on CFDs or futures contracts funded by the prop firm. Three concrete advantages:

  1. Exposure without 15,000 to 25,000 USD of capital: an LME nickel contract represents 6 tonnes. A nickel CFD at a connected broker lets you take a position with a few hundred dollars of margin, while keeping your risk-management rules.
  2. Leverage framed by the challenge rules: the maximum drawdown (often 10% in one phase, 5% daily) acts as a guardrail, provided you size positions on nickel's volatility and not on EUR/USD's.
  3. Genuine diversification of your trading plan: nickel correlates weakly with major forex pairs. Many challenges are validated on multi-asset portfolios, and nickel's low correlation with EUR/USD makes it an excellent decorrelation tool.

Compared with the other industrial metals traded at prop firms, nickel is more volatile than copper (often 1.5 to 2 times the daily ATR in percentage) and far more nervous than platinum. For an overview of more classic metal behaviour, see the live gold price and the silver price.

Which instruments depending on your prop firm

  • CFD prop firms: nickel generally trades as a spot CFD tracking the LME (labelled XNI/USD or Nickel vs USD), with wider spreads than gold (expect 20 to 40 USD per tonne depending on liquidity providers, i.e. about 0.15 to 0.3% of the contract).
  • Futures prop firms: the LME Nickel contract (6 tonnes per lot, quoted in USD/t) also exists in mini-lots at some futures programmes. Watch roll dates (each LME contract has a specific prompt date): trading a contract near its prompt exposes you to basis risk.
  • Trading hours: the LME mainly quotes during the European session, but connected CFDs trade almost continuously with a daily break. The deepest liquidity sits between 12:00 and 19:00 Paris time, the window of the official LME sessions.

Challenge rules applied to nickel

Nickel does not forgive approximation on three classic challenge rules.

1. Drawdown versus volatility

A 2 to 3% move in one session is common on nickel; during geopolitical tensions or LME stock publications, 5% gaps occur. On a 100,000 USD account with a 10% maximum drawdown, an oversized nickel position can consume 2 to 3% of capital in a single candle. Simple rule: limit the risk of any nickel position to 0.5% of capital, versus the usual 1% on forex, until the account has a profit cushion.

2. News trading

Most prop firms forbid opening positions within 2 minutes of a major announcement. On nickel, the releases that move the market are: LME stocks (daily, around 12:00 GMT), Chinese industrial data (PMI, steel production), and Indonesian policy announcements on export quotas. As explained in our guide on commodities in a challenge, planning a nickel trading strategy without accounting for the LME calendar is validating a challenge on luck, not on method.

3. Holding positions over the weekend

If your prop firm bans weekend holding, be careful: nickel can gap on mining news, export taxes or producer bankruptcies. In March 2022, whole accounts were wiped out by a gap nobody imagined. If holding is allowed, cut the position in half before Friday's close.

A typical strategy: trading nickel while respecting volatility

Identify the market regime

Nickel alternates between two regimes: surplus range (the dominant regime from 2024 to 2026, between 15,000 and 18,000 USD/t) and event-driven breakout (supply tension, short squeeze, sanctions). Measure the 14-day ATR: below 400 USD/t, favour the range; above 700 USD/t, switch to trend-following logic with wide stops and a reduced position.

Range trading plan (surplus regime)

  • Sell zone: 17,500 to 18,200 USD/t; buy zone: 15,000 to 15,500 USD/t, built on the 100 and 200-day moving averages.
  • Confirmation: RSI divergences on the 4H chart + a return into the zone on the 1H chart.
  • Stop: beyond the daily ATR (typically 60 to 80 USD beyond the zone), maximum risk 0.5% of the account.
  • Target: 1.5 to 2 times the risk, with partial exit at 1R and moving the stop to breakeven. Two to three setups per month are enough: selectivity is the funded trader's real weapon, as our guide on the rules to know on commodities in a challenge explains.

Managing costs and swap

Nickel spreads are 5 to 10 times gold's in percentage terms, and the overnight swap on industrial-metal CFDs is significant. On a multi-day swing strategy, factor the swap into your expectancy: a 3-day position can cost the equivalent of 0.3 to 0.6% of notional. Nickel scalping in a challenge is therefore rarely profitable; the natural format is the 1 to 5-day swing.

Classic beginner mistakes on nickel

  • Oversizing because the price looks cheap: "15,500 USD/t is historically cheap" is not a strategy. The market can stay in surplus for years.
  • Ignoring the LME stock calendar: opening a trade at 11:55 GMT, five minutes before the stock report, means paying a widened spread for nothing.
  • Confusing battery nickel and steel nickel: the class 1 premium and NPI have different dynamics; connected CFDs track the official LME contract.
  • Forgetting Indonesia: a Jakarta export-quota announcement can move the market more than three months of technical consolidation.
  • Copying a gold/silver plan: nickel has its own seasonality (industrial support in the first half-year, pressure on stocks in the second). Reusing the oil trading with a prop firm plan or a precious-metals plan without recalibrating the ATR is a frequent mistake.

Conclusion: nickel, a patience business

Trading nickel with a prop firm in 2026 means exploiting a structurally surplus market punctuated by brutal explosions, with costly spreads that impose swing rather than scalping. Traders who validate their challenges on this metal share three traits: reduced position sizing (0.5% risk), an LME and China calendar consulted systematically, and deliberate selectivity on technical zones.
