NinjaTrader: complete 2026 guide (features, pricing, compatible prop firms)

NinjaTrader has been the most widely used trading platform by US futures day traders for more than twenty years. With its ultra-fast SuperDOM, its Order Flow+ suite and its C# automation engine, it has established itself as the tool of reference for scalpers and algorithmic futures traders. And above all for you: it is also one of the platforms most widely offered by futures prop firms, with 18 compatible firms listed on Fundedtrader.fr.

In this complete 2026 guide, we review the platform: its history, its detailed features, its pricing, its strengths and weaknesses, and above all the prop firms where you can use it to pass a challenge.

NinjaTrader overview and history

NinjaTrader was founded in 2003 in Denver, Colorado. The company started as a software publisher: its charting and execution platform, paired with partner brokers, quickly won over the American futures trading community. The current version, NinjaTrader 8, was released to the public in December 2016 after several years of development. It is a complete rewrite of the charting engine and the backtesting engine, still actively maintained and updated today.

Since then, the platform claims more than 2 million accounts created and an ecosystem of more than 1,000 third-party vendors selling indicators, strategies and tools in its integrated app store. A major turning point came in 2025: the American crypto giant Kraken acquired NinjaTrader for 1.5 billion dollars (announced in March 2025, finalized in May 2025), the largest deal ever made between crypto and traditional finance. NinjaTrader continues to exist as a standalone platform, with a announced roadmap including crypto futures, stocks and options.

On the regulatory side, NinjaTrader is registered as a Futures Commission Merchant with the CFTC and is a member of the NFA in the United States. In January 2026, the group launched its European offering through Payward Europe, Kraken's CySEC-regulated Cypriot entity, initially opening to the Netherlands and Germany (France and Italy expected later in the year).

Key takeaway: NinjaTrader is today a futures-focused platform (CME, CBOT, Eurex). No stocks, no spot forex, no ETFs: that is its specialization and, depending on your trading style, either its strength or its limit.

Detailed features

Charting and technical analysis

NinjaTrader 8 offers a complete charting engine: candlestick, Heikin Ashi, Renko, range and Point & Figure charts, with more than 100 built-in indicators and a scripting language to create your own. The Market Analyzer works like a screener grid: you watch dozens of contracts in real time with conditional alerts, ideal for spotting futures setups on ES, NQ, YM, GC or micro contracts without opening 15 charts.

Order Flow+ and the SuperDOM

This is NinjaTrader's signature. The SuperDOM (Depth of Market) displays the order book with an advertised 25 ms refresh and one-click execution, with built-in order brackets and trailing stops. The Order Flow+ suite adds scalpers' favorite tools: footprint charts (volumetric bars), volume profile, cumulative delta, block detection and bid/ask volumes. Few retail platforms offer such a fine reading of order flow on futures.

Automation: NinjaScript and Strategy Builder

NinjaTrader offers two levels of automation. The Strategy Builder lets you create automated strategies without coding, by assembling logical blocks (conditions, signals, position management). For developers, NinjaScript gives access to a real language: Microsoft's C#, not a proprietary language. You can code indicators as well as strategies, and run them in simulation or live. It is a killer argument for algo traders, which we detail in our article on algorithmic trading in a prop firm.

Tick-level backtesting

The NinjaTrader 8 backtest engine works on historical tick data, with a built-in optimizer (testing strategies over parameter ranges) and the ability to replay the market tick by tick. It is one of the most serious retail backtesting environments, provided you buy or collect quality data. Our complete methodology for testing a strategy before a challenge is detailed in our backtesting guide.

Copy trading

NinjaTrader has no natively integrated copy trading, but proven third-party tools exist: the Account Copier can for example replicate transactions from a source account to up to 20 target accounts, useful for managing several prop firm accounts in parallel with the same strategy.

Mobile, web and desktop

The desktop application is Windows only (no native Mac version: you need a virtual machine or Parallels). The platform also exists in a web version and in iOS and Android mobile apps for monitoring and execution, but with fewer features than the desktop: automation and backtesting remain on Windows.

Pricing and versions: the complete table

NinjaTrader's model changed with the arrival of integrated brokerage: the platform is free for live trading if you trade through NinjaTrader Brokerage, with commission-based billing. Here is the 2026 summary table.

Offer / versionPriceWhat you get
Unlimited simulationFreeComplete charting, backtesting, market data, demo account with no time limit
Live trading via NinjaTrader Brokerage (US)Free platform, commissions from ~$0.09/contract (micro)Full live access: SuperDOM, Order Flow+, automation
European brokerage (CySEC, via Payward Europe)Free, per-contract commissions (not disclosed)Netherlands and Germany since January 2026, expansion planned
Order Flow+ module~$59/month (if not included in your plan)Footprints, volume profile, cumulative delta
Side fees to knowInactivity $25-35/month, wire withdrawal ~$30To watch if you trade little
Desktop / web / mobileIncludedDesktop Windows only; web and iOS/Android mobile apps

Good news for prop firm traders: most futures firms provide a NinjaTrader license with the challenge account, so you generally have nothing to pay for the platform itself during validation. Always check in the firm's rules whether the Order Flow+ module is included or offered as a paid option.

Who is this platform for?

NinjaTrader is an excellent choice if you are:

  • A futures scalper who lives on the SuperDOM and wants fast execution;
  • An order flow trader who wants footprints and delta on futures;
  • An algorithmic trader who prefers coding in C# rather than a proprietary language;
  • A micro-contract trader who cares about low commissions.

It is less suitable if you are looking for spot forex, stocks or CFDs (look at MetaTrader or cTrader instead, whose guides are on the blog), if you are on Mac, or if you are a complete beginner: the learning curve is real and futures are highly leveraged instruments.

NinjaTrader and prop firm challenges

NinjaTrader is one of the best-served platforms among futures prop firms: among the firms listed in our prop firm comparison tool, 18 firms explicitly mention it in their platform rules. Most provide the license with the challenge account, sometimes with a list of allowed modules to check before starting (our checklist before starting a challenge helps you there).

The NinjaTrader compatible prop firms, with their detailed reviews:

Watch out for classic pitfalls in NinjaTrader challenges: some firms require you to use their version of the platform or ban certain third-party add-ons (VPS not allowed, account copiers forbidden, automated strategies limited). These rules vary from one firm to another, so always check the "platforms" section of the chosen firm's review.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The best retail order flow ecosystem on futures (SuperDOM, footprints, delta);
  • C# automation and very serious tick-level backtesting;
  • Free unlimited simulation with real data, ideal before a challenge;
  • Among the lowest futures commissions on the market via the integrated brokerage;
  • Huge third-party ecosystem (more than 1,000 vendors) and 18 compatible prop firms.

Cons

  • Futures only: no stocks, no ETFs, no spot forex, no CFDs;
  • Desktop is Windows only, no native Mac version;
  • More limited mobile/web version than the desktop;
  • Order Flow+ module billed at ~$59/month when not included;
  • Inactivity and withdrawal fees to watch if you trade through NinjaTrader Brokerage.

FAQ: your questions about NinjaTrader

Is NinjaTrader free?

The platform is free for unlimited simulation, and free for live trading if you trade through NinjaTrader Brokerage (commission-based billing). Some modules, like Order Flow+ (~$59/month), remain paid depending on the plan. Historically, lifetime licenses ($999 single-broker, $1,399 multi-broker) were sold: the model has moved to free with integrated brokerage.

Can you pass a prop firm challenge with NinjaTrader?

Yes, and it is even one of the best options for futures challenges: Topstep, Apex Trader Funding, TradeDay, Elite Trader Funding, MyFundedFutures and 13 other firms listed on Fundedtrader.fr explicitly mention it as a compatible platform. The license is generally provided with the challenge account.

Does NinjaTrader work on Mac?

No, not natively. The desktop version is Windows only; on Mac you need a virtual machine, Boot Camp or a remote PC, and you are left with the web/mobile versions (more limited) for monitoring.

Can you use robots (EAs) on NinjaTrader?

Yes. The Strategy Builder lets you create automated strategies without coding, and NinjaScript lets you develop custom strategies and indicators in C#. Warning: some prop firms limit or ban automated trading, check their rules before launching a robot in a challenge.

NinjaTrader or TradingView to start a challenge?

For futures challenges with fast execution and order flow, NinjaTrader is superior. For multi-asset analysis, simplicity and cross-platform use (Mac, browser), TradingView is more accessible. Many traders at the firms mentioned above actually use both: TradingView for analysis, NinjaTrader for execution.

Verdict

NinjaTrader is not a platform for learning trading in general, but it is probably the best retail platform for trading futures in a prop firm. Fast execution, complete order flow, C# automation, tick-level backtesting, a gigantic ecosystem and 18 compatible prop firms: the case is impressive. In exchange, you accept a Windows-only platform, strongly futures-oriented, with a real learning curve.

Our rating: 4.5/5 for futures traders in a prop firm, 3/5 for general-purpose use.
