After Passing Your Challenge: 7 Steps to Succeed on a Funded Account

You passed your challenge. Congratulations, but the most delicate part starts now: the funded account. Every week, traders who shine in challenges blow up their real account within days because they failed to structure their move to production. Between 2024 and 2026, the rules evolved (time limits removed at FTMO from 2024, generalized trailing drawdowns, stricter consistency rules): here are the 7 steps that make the difference between a durable funded account and going back to square one. ## Step 1: re-read the funded account rules before your first trade The funded account is not a simple extension of your challenge. Profit targets disappear, but risk constraints often tighten. Always check: - **The drawdown type**: static or trailing. A trailing drawdown follows you as soon as you make profits: at BluSky Trading (rated 4.1/5 on Trustpilot), a futures specialist, the drawdown is trailing and the 10% challenge target gives way to a much stricter loss ceiling on the funded account. - **The daily drawdown**: often 5% in the challenge and the funded stage alike, but sometimes reduced. - **Consistency rules**: minimum number of trading days, maximum number of concentrated profit days (at some firms, one single big day does not count beyond a set percentage of the total). - **Allowed instruments**: some firms restrict the funded account to the instruments actually traded during the challenge, or forbid certain asset classes in production. Take 30 minutes to write these rules on a single page, next to your screen. Most funded account expulsions come from a forgotten rule, not from a bad analysis. Date this sheet: firms change their terms, and a monthly check of the official rules page must be part of your routine. ## Step 2: choose your withdrawal cycle from day one A funded account without a withdrawal plan is an account you end up burning. Before your first trade, decide: - **The frequency**: modern firms pay faster and faster. BluSky Trading processes withdrawals in 5 days; others offer weekly cycles, like uFunded which announces up to 10 payments per month on its instant funding plans. - **The first amount**: set it in advance. Withdrawing your first $1,000 creates a positive psychological signal and proves the payment chain works before the balance becomes significant. - **The method**: bank transfer, crypto, e-wallet. Check the fees: some withdrawals cost 1 to 3% depending on the channel. - **The paperwork**: KYC is often tightened for the first withdrawal. Prepare your documents in advance to avoid two weeks of administrative waiting. A funded trader who has already completed a first withdrawal is statistically far more likely to keep their account: they have moved past the "I will let everything compound" stage, which nearly always leads to overtrading. Check our [payout proofs](https://fundedtrader.fr/preuves-payouts) page to see real payment chains. ## Step 3: restart exactly from the money management that got you validated The classic post-validation trap is a change of regime. You passed with 0.5 to 1% risk per trade, a limited number of positions and controlled sessions: keep doing exactly the same. The visible capital increased ($50,000 or $100,000 on the screen), but your edge did not change. Concretely: 1. Risk per trade stays at 0.5 to 1% maximum. 2. The number of trades per day stays capped (for example 3). 3. The daily self-stop loss stays below half of the allowed daily drawdown: if your limit is 5%, end your day at -2%. 4. Cumulative risk on correlated positions stays capped: three positions open simultaneously on correlated currency pairs are not three independent risks. A funded account is not managed like a demo account to be redone: every percent of drawdown consumed is one percent of margin less for the difficult weeks. ## Step 4: build the consistency rules into your schedule Most firms now require a minimum number of trading days (often 4 to 5 days with at least one position, weekends excluded) and sometimes a distribution of profits across several days. These rules also apply on funded accounts for the first withdrawals. Plan ahead: if your firm asks for 5 active days before the first payout, spread them over two weeks rather than forcing 5 consecutive days. Consistency is the real job of the funded trader: it matters more than the raw performance of a single day. ## Step 5: document every trade from the first day of the funded account A trading journal is not an option in production. Note for every trade: the thesis, the context (session, news), the risk taken, the result, and above all your emotional state before entry. You will find on the site a complete [weekly performance review](https://fundedtrader.fr/blog/revue-de-performance-challenge-prop-firm-methode-hebdomadaire-en) method that applies just as well in a challenge as on a funded account. This document is what will tell you, in 4 weeks, whether your edge holds on real capital or whether you simply traded two good weeks of market. ## Step 6: manage the pressure of real capital Moving from a $50,000 challenge to a funded account where money flows in and out creates new pressure. Three reflexes: - **Disconnect the balance from your screen**: hide the floating P&L if your platform allows it (TradingView and MetaTrader 5 both do). - **Plan no-trade days**: not trading is a valid decision, especially before a major macro event. - **Set a weekly loss cap**: beyond it, stop until Monday. This is your personal safety net, independent of the firm's rules. ## Step 7: prepare scaling, but one level at a time Scaling plans promise progressive capital increases (up to $250,000 at BluSky Trading, $360,000 allocation at uFunded). The right strategy: consolidate 8 profitable weeks at the current level before requesting the next one. Each scaling level often reintroduces performance targets, and therefore a risk of overtrading. Ask yourself before each level: do my metrics (average R, drawdown consumed, consistency) justify the capital increase, or is it my ego talking? ## What a solid first month on a funded account looks like Here is what a healthy first month looks like, calibrated on a $100,000 account with 5% daily drawdown and 10% total drawdown: - **Week 1**: restart the system at reduced risk (0.5%), 8 to 12 trades, expected result between -1% and +2%. Real goal: proving stability, not winning. - **Week 2**: normal regime, first withdrawal requested ($500 to $1,000) to validate the payment chain. - **Week 3**: full metrics review. If the average R is above 1.2 and total drawdown consumed is below 3%, the account is under control. - **Week 4**: consolidation, decision on scaling only if the previous three weeks are positive. ## FAQ: questions before the first funded trade **Can I change strategy between the challenge and the funded account?** No, and it is the worst possible idea. Your validation rested on one system: any modification weakens it. Change only after 4 documented weeks of results, never before. **When should I request the first withdrawal?** As soon as the firm's conditions allow it (minimum active days, first profit threshold). A quick first withdrawal proves the payment chain works and eases the pressure. **Does the trailing drawdown reset after a withdrawal?** Often not: the limit follows the equity peak reached. Check this precise point in your firm's rules, it is one of the most frequent causes of expulsion. **Can I refuse scaling and stay at the current level?** Yes, and it is sometimes the most profitable choice: a mastered level with regular withdrawals beats a capital increase that takes you out of your zone of competence. ## Classic first-month mistakes on a funded account - Doubling position size "because it is real money now" (real money is protected, not exposed more). - Changing strategy during the first losing week. - Refusing to withdraw for fear of "breaking the momentum". - Ignoring rule changes announced by the firm: prop firms change their terms, sometimes with little notice. ## When to delegate your validation If you pass challenges regularly but systematically fail on the funded account, the problem is not technical: it lies in the process. That is exactly the role of our [prop firm validation service](https://fundedtrader.fr/blog/service-de-validation-prop-firm-comment-ca-marche-2026-en): structuring the move to production, monitoring rule compliance and securing the first payouts. Before any commitment, compare firm conditions on our [prop firm comparison tool](https://fundedtrader.fr/comparateur-prop-firms). ## Conclusion Passing a challenge is a performance; holding a funded account is a system. Rules re-read, withdrawal cycle defined, money management unchanged, journal kept, pressure managed, scaling under control: these 7 steps turn a one-off win into recurring income. Start today, before your first funded trade.
